A Clinical Observation of 192 Intestinal Obstruction

Abstract
|
|
|
This report was made for 192 cases of patients with the intestinal obstruction which were treated surgically at the Dept. of general surgery, Woo Sok Hospital during the past 6 years period from July 1969 to June 1975.
.1. The most common causes of intestinal obstruction were postoperative adhesion (34.4%), Intussusception(30.2%) and hernia (10.9%)
2. The sex ratio was male preponderance as 2:1 and the most prevalent age group was in second and third decade as 29.2% of all.
3. The cardinal symptoms were abdominal pain(71.6%), vomiting (52.6%), abdominal distension (55.7%) and abdominal rigidity (51.0%).
4. As for the operative fashion: 104 cases(54.1%) were treated by operative release of obstruction with operative decompression, 38 cases(19.9%) by primary intestinal resection.
5. Postoperative complications were noted in 21.8% of the total 192 cases, and wound infection (40.5%) were most frequently encountered.
6. The mortality rate was 6.2%(12 cases). The most frequent cause of death was electrolite imbalance (33.3%).
